Resident TCM & Meditation Contributor
No licensed TCM physician can get as true blue Singaporean as Stanley. Also, no TCM physician I’ve met till today (and believe me, I’ve met quite a number of them!) has that deep a knowledge of TCM, and yet doesn’t even promulgate TCM as the be all and end all – opting often to recommend clients cleansing, lymphasizing, meditation, nutritional regimes, self-help exercises over traditional herbs and acupuncture.
As Stanley is so energetically sensitive, his diagnosis procedure starts by analysing your posture (up till studying imbalanced wear and tear on your footwear), the way you walk (or limp), and from possibly a handshake even. Does he do the traditional pulse reading? Well, of course, he can do that very well! However, more often than not, he uses iridology to tell you about yourself and what needs work.
And, despite his firm belief in science, when I share the science behind certain products with him, all he does is hold the bottle firmly in his palm and wait for the energetic response. I’m happy to say that he’s been so impressed with our products that he has given us the green light to replace his range of products and to gradually revamp his shop front’s posters. Well, we are not after all this control – but the confidence he expresses in us certainly gives our work much more meaning and morale.
His journey in wellness first began in 1983 when red dots started appearing on his skin. As it got much worse, he sought the medical advice available at the National Skin Centre in Singapore and was diagnosed to be having psoriasis.
He started taking all kinds of drugs, applying different lotions, and undergone UVB light treatment and the like – all without any permanent cure. At best, it would provide some temporary relief. What became apparent to him was that his condition worsened as the days went by and he became more reliant on these treatment modes which he knew would be hazardous to his health and well-being in the long run.
This was when he started learning more about alternative medicine and healthcare, resorting to fasting and meditation as a means to keep his psoriasis at bay. In fact, he lived (albeit more comfortably) with psoriasis for a good 9 years before getting retrenched in 1992.
By then, he was already big on alternative and natural medicine and the retrenchment was a compelling sign for him to start something meaningful. Considered one of the pioneers in the Singapore scene for organic foods and supplements business, Stanley ran fasting courses as well. Well, fasting was the one method that helped improve his psoriasis tremendously after all. Many cancer patients were taken to his fasting protocols and went to him for advice.
In 1998, Stanley saw the need for objective TCM knowledge and embarked on his journey in becoming a certified TCM physician. As a TCM doctor in Singapore, he’s very well versed in English and has read very extensively not just on TCM, but on topics outside TCM for a holistic viewpoint. He doesn’t believe in over-acupuncturing as he knows that it can drain a patient’s lifeforce if not done with correct understanding. Also, he sees acupuncture as a method of transferring healing energy from a point of compassion.
His core belief is in education and self-help as anyone with the discipline to practise certain empowering self-help exercises has the power to heal themselves e.g. acupoint stimulation, sacrum alignment, meditation. Coupled with good nutrition and exercises such as yoga, pilates, resistance training and brisk walking – he believes one can achieve complete healing.
